Behind me I heard Kori call my name, but I daren’t stop to speak to Kori. I didn’t know what to say to him and I certainly didn’t wan’t to hear anything he had to say to me. There were too many people in this house. I fled the railway room only to find that there were people everywhere. I needed to sort out my thoughts and feelings but how? I felt betrayed, but Kori couldn’t have betrayed me. The trouble was that, the more I thought about it, the more it seemed that it was the only explanation. Of course Liam could have been mistaken, but Liam isn’t daft, and in any case, if it were that simple why had he burst into tears? Then there was Kori. I remembered his stricken face. Was that guilt? I was outside. I don’t remember going outside but it was logical. There was certainly nowhere inside that I could be on my own. I retreated to the stable. “How can you be so wrong about someone?” I demanded of the nearest horse. Not one horse offered an explanation but Finley, alarmed, pushed his muzzle toward me. I patted him gently. “All right boy,” I told him, “It isn’t your fault”. It certainly wasn’t, but he was quite prepared to lend a sympathetic ear. Horses don’t judge. They don’t say, “Well it’s your own stupid fault for believing in him in the first place”. Certainly Finley didn’t say that. He didn’t find it at all incongruous that I still wanted to love Kori, or that I would prefer not to be here, being an embarassment to him. No, I didn’t feel suicidal. I know what that does to other people and I couldn’t do that. I needed to understand how I DID feel. I told my equine friend everything. I opened my heart and laid myself bare. He made no comment beyond the occasional sympathetic snort. Sometimes one of the other horses would snort in sympathy. I was conscious that nobody had come out to look for me. Jonah probably told them not to. As I finished telling Finley all, I slid to the floor and sat among the straw. I knew somebody would come sometime, they wouldn’t leave me alone for ever, but I wasn’t prepared for it to be the Professor. He said not a word, but quietly slid to the ground and sat beside me. “You’ll ruin your suit”, I told him. “And what makes you think that you’re less important than my suit?”, he said quietly. Suddenly the tears welled. I couldn’t stop them. His arm was around my shoulder instantly and I cried into his shoulder. I don’t know how long we sat like that. I would have stayed like it forever. Eventually he spoke. “Simon, do you love Kori?” “I don’t know”, I replied, “I did”. “That’s not what I asked,” he responded, “and you do know. If I was to ask one of the horses…..” “They’d never tell”, I said. “So you did tell izmit escort bayan them, and you need to tell you, but you don’t need to tell me”. I was undone. This man could see right through me. He hadn’t finished though. “What you need to know is whether Kori loves you. Now your own experience will tell you that eventually. I, on the other hand, could tell by the expression on his face before I came out here. Peter’s with him at the moment but it isn’t Peter he needs right now”. It was time for me to be strong. “Peter lives nearby and I live half a world away. He’s better off with Peter than with me”. “Simon, Love isn’t like sweets – the more you give away the less you have left for everybody else. It’s more like playing the piano – the more you do it, the better you get at it”. I was stunned for a moment, but then realisation dawned. “Did Jonah tell you that?” I asked. “No, young man. Jesus told me that, many years ago. I told Jonah a long time back too. I see Jesus sometimes speaks to your heart too.” “How did you know?” “From your reaction when I said it……… Luke, right?” I nodded. “Simon, you’re a good man. Now Jesus also told us to love one another. I think it’s time you went and loved Kori.” “Are you coming?” “When I’ve had a chance to brush my suit down”. I headed indoors, kicked off my shoes in the mud-room and strolled into the kitchen. Neil was cutting sandwiches while Peter boiled the kettle. “You alright”, asked Peter. I nodded. “We need to talk”, he said. I nodded again and retreated to the mud-room. Peter followed me. “Look Simon,” he said, “I didn’t know”. “It doesn’t matter” I said. “It matters to Kori, and to you, so it matters to me” he replied. “Peter, I know that”, I said, “and when I’m half a world away from here, you’ll still be here for him. I don’t expect you to change that just for me. I did, but I was stupid”. “But you’ll still love him”, he observed. “Yes, and I hope he’ll still love me, though I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t after this morning. I reckon the world’s big enough for both of us. I’d better go see Kori” He nodded and suddenly stuck out his hand. I was never more pleased to shake somebody’s hand. I retreated to the kitchen where Neil said, “Simon, I’d be real obliged if you’d take these sandwiches through to the TV room. Kori’s in there, and I think everybody else is playing trains. They won’t be too upset if you don’t call them down right away.” I did as I was bid. Kori wore an expression I hope never to see again on his handsome face. I expect you think I’m going to tell you what Kori and I had to say to each other. Well think again. Kori and I were good. Years later we are still good. That is all you need to know. It was good that Neil made a lot of sandwiches, because there was a lot of us. When we were fed Kori suggested we ride the sleigh. The sleigh is beautiful and I couldn’t believe that Neil and Peter made it. Finley doesn’t have a lot to do with the sleigh, but the other horses, Eric and Dusty, certainly do. We all went for rides out to the old orchard and back and we all enjoyed being out in the open. Jonah, in the meantime, was upstairs in Jakes office. I think we had forgotten that he came here to work. When we finally came in he told us that he had made a lot of progress already. Tomorrow was Good Friday, but that isn’t such a big deal in America and the CEO of Phillips-Murchisson wanted a meeting. Jonah said he lives in Montague so no need for a trek into Boston. Well the Professor said he has friends in Miller’s Falls that he could do with visiting so he’d be glad to run Jonah out there and bring him back, if we could only entertain Ian for the day. I’m quite sure that if the CEO had lived in Outer Mongolia, the Professor izmit eve gelen escort would have dropped Jonah off there and visited some of his old Himalayan pals. In the kitchen we found a Chinese lady whom we hadn’t seen before, accompanied by a very small Chinese boy. “Ning!” exclaimed Liam, and promptly lifted the boy off his feet. Carrying the boy with his hands clasped around his stomach and his feet inches from the ground Liam presented him to Jonah and introduced him, he then carried him to Peter and introduced him, then Sammy, then Luke. “Liam”, I said, “I can say hello to him just as easily with his feet on the floor” “Oh yes”, said Liam, as if he had momentarily forgotten the fact. Ning was deposited on the floor and introduced. The little chap shook hands politely. His mother thanked Jake profusely and departed. Jonah looked at Jake inquiringly and Jake shrugged. “I guess we’ve got an extra child for the night, ” he said. “I don’t remember being asked about that, but she’s gone and he hasn’t so……” “Yay!” cried Liam, swinging the child at the length of his arm. “Hmmmm!”, said Jake, standing beside me. “Remind me I need to have a chat with Liam”. “Remind me I need to have a chat with him” I said. “Oh I had that chat with him this morning. If you want to have it as well, be my guest but, if I discover that he had anything to do with this, he’s sleeping in the barn tonight”. I grinned. “I shouldn’t do that, ” I said, “You’d only end up with six kids in there in the morning, and probably some adults too”. “And which would you be I wonder”, he said, patting my arm. I must have loooked confused because he bent close to my ear and whispered, “Just ask yourself why Ning said ‘Hi’ to the others, but shook hands with you”. Sammy tapped Jake on the shoulder. “Liam wants to know”, he said, ” if it’s warm enough to go swimming yet, but he’s scared to ask you himself because he thinks you’re cross with him”. Jake staightened up. “Thank you Sammy”. he said, “I’ll go and tell Liam if it’s warm enough to go swimming”. He strode halfway across the room, then stopped, turned and came back. “That is, of course, “he said, “unless YOU want to know as well”. “I don’t know if I’m allowed to go swimming”, Sammy replied sadly, “because of my back”. “I’ll tell you what young man,” said Jake. “Ning only swims like a fish, but he’s too small for rough games. Can you look after him for me if we go down to the pool?” Sammy brightened up immediately while Jake went to confer with Jonah and Neil. Within moments we were all kitted out with towels and swimsuits, excepting Mr Ito, and the Professor, who abstained from the party. Jake still had the Church minibus (his own vehicle was down by the Church) so with Neil’s pick-up it was possible to fit us all in. It didn’t take long to arrive nowhere. That’s where we were. Precisely in the middle of it, and it was lovely. The natural pool was so inviting, and was hidden on several sides by large rocks. We were undressed in no time and several of us had put on swimming trunks. Several of us hadn’t. Liam was first in the water, by dint of not troubling with attire of any sort, and Ning was behind him with Sammy following suit. I wondered what his Roman Catholic parents would have said about that, but then…. things change don’t they? I put on my trunks and followed the gang but, seeing Jonah, Jake and Neil were all naked, I thought, when in Rome……. Everybody was splashing about in the water. Some of the kids were swimming underwater and trying to drag the adults under. Some of the adults were tossing kids in the air. Eventually Liam spotted the two who were apart from everybody else. I watched as he led a deputation of youngsters in their direction. izmit otele gelen escort Instantly I swam in their direction but I needn’t have bothered. “STOP!” came the cry, loud and clear. Everybody obeyed instantly. “EVERYBODY OUT OF THE WATER”. It was Jake, and he wasn’t prepared to debate the point. “Sammy, stay with Ning please, everybody else OUT, NOW!” We paraded on the shore and Jake climbed out after us. “Right, everybody, we’re going to play a little differently from now on”, he told us. “I saw you all headed over there”. He pointed to where Sammy and Ning were playing peacefully. “Now I’m surprised at the lot of you”. he told us. ” You all know Ning’s too small for rough games, but Sammy isn’t. Right? Peter; you saw Sammy in hospital. Do you want to put him back there? Do you Liam? Now we can go play, but we’re going to do it safely, so use your brains.” I watched everybody diving into the water again. The kids were playing with each other now as the adults seemed to have formed a three-man cordon to fence off Ning and Sammy’s corner. I didn’t dive after them because I had noticed the one person who didn’t dive in. The little boy who quietly slid around behind the pick-up. I waited until everybody seemed to be engaged in the playing, then slid round there myself. Sure enough a naked ten-year old sat on the rough pathway with his back against a wheel, crying his eyes out. I sat beside him and put an arm around his quivering shoulders. Through his sobs he was quietly singing to himself. “The bear went over the mountain, the bear went over the mountain. ” I hugged him tightly. It would be a little while before conversation would be possible.
